When Small Businesses Give Back to the Community, the Community Thrives

While many consumers and business owners know that for every dollar spent at a local business, more of it stays in the local economy. But did you know that much of the money that stays in the local area is re-spent there, as payroll, for local goods and services, and donations to area charities. It’s not just about keeping more local dollars here, it’s about making a social impact in our local communities.

As a small business, you’re as much a part of the community as anyone else, if not more. You build your local economy, provide personal service, and give your town a unique place to shop. But, as a small business owner, you know what it’s like to operate on a tight budget. Here are some ways to give back to the people who support you without breaking the bank!

Sponsor an event, sports team, or other organization

It’s great exposure for your business and FUN! Whether it’s a youth soccer team or some sort of local festival, figure out a way to get involved in something where you can provide help for those who need it. Whether it be with equipment, space, or supplies, there are lots of ways in which you can help out a team or event that needs it.

Donate a portion of sales to a charity

Choose a period of time and make it so a percentage of sales goes toward the charity or organization of your choice. Your customers will love knowing that they’re helping out a charity or organization and you can feel good knowing that you’re helping, too. You can even place a donation jar in your storefront, if you have one, to encourage patrons to support or donate toward a cause.

You could even do a simple add-on at the point of sale. Ask customers to round up to the nearest dollar or simply give $1 to the cause.

Volunteer as a representative of your business

Volunteer! This is an easy way to give back. However, as a business owner, you may not have the time. We know what that’s like! So encourage your employees to volunteer as well. If you’ve got a team of people, have them get involved and give their time and energy to others! Even better, organize a group volunteer day that can double as a team building exercise.

Shop local… just as you’d hope members of your community would do

As you already know, shopping small gives so much to your community, supporting the local economy and creating a thriving entrepreneurial spirit. The same way you encourage locals to shop at your business, make sure you’re spreading the love by doing the same. In addition, be intentional about supporting minority-owned businesses! It’s an important part of fostering a welcoming, all-encompassing community and will ensure that all businesses have the opportunity to thrive.

Organize a drive

Whether it’s clothes, food, school supplies… if there’s a cause you’re passionate about, organizing a donation drive is a great way to give back. Utilize email marketing and social media to let your customers know about the drive and encourage them to participate! It’s a great way to get the community together and give toward a cause that needs it.

Giving back doesn’t have to be difficult or strictly financial donations. In fact, it’s much easier than you may think. Cultivating social good into your business, your employees, your mission, and your team is a smart, healthy way to build community and create lasting change.
